ENG 101
SYLLABUS DR. AXELROD,
ENG 101, SYLLABUS, SCCC, Required
Texts: How
to Apologize by David B. Axelrod
Essential Handbook for Writers.
Jane Aaron, editor. TO
SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE ENG 101 YOU MUST DO THE FOLLOWING WORK: 1.
All steps for each essay completed on time and in the order they are
assigned. 2. An
argument/critical analysis of poetry following the outlined
persuasive form and style sheet. Minimum length
is 600
words. 3. A second, persuasive essay on an issue/topic of contemporary importance following outlined persuasive form and style sheet. Minimum length is 600 words. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES of any kind are allowed in this second essay. 4. A set of research paragraphs, to be included in a fully revised and expanded version of the second essay you wrote. You will be adding two properly documented research sources in MLA form. This will count as a “third essay.” ANY MISUSE OF SOURCES OR FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER MLA STYLE WILL RESULT IN A "F."
DO
NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES IN YOUR PAPERS. Anyone producing a plagiarism or error in source use will be not be allowed to pass the class. That means improper use of sources or passing in someone else’s work will result in a flunk. You must do the research assignment and correct any error(s) noted to be sure you pass the class! You won't pass if you use sources incorrectly! Read this about 5.
A final, fourth “Turning Point” essay of aprox. 1,000 words,
demonstrating full grammatical
and stylistic competence. Grading: YOU CAN REVISE ANY WORK UP TO “B.” To receive an “A” you must be able to do excellent work on your own—something we can determine together by the end of the term. Work until you get it right! Extra credit is available if you discuss it with me during the term. You should review my statement on GRADING STANDARDS. Deadlines are critical. Failure to adhere to deadlines will lower your grade. Missing work will result in a "W." Method:
This class approaches composition from the point of view that a student
must be personally challenged and engaged to do a job well. It is not my job to
force you to agree with any one point of view. However, I must insist on good
logic and I, personally, have no patience for prejudice. Thus, some subjects may
be "overruled." By that I mean, when you send me your topical/issues
ideas, I may have to suggest you take a different topic or point of view if your
proposal can't be proved or exhibits the kind of false logic common in
prejudice. Generally, you will write best, what you know and feel most strongly,
so, in that way, I hope you write what interests you! While my office hours are posted here, generally, on-line students should do all their conferences via email! Any time you want me, just email me. For good measure, I am giving you my phone number! Email works best: axelrodthepoet@yahoo.com. I have six posted office hours but YOU SHOULD CONFIRM YOUR OFFICE VISIT IN ADVANCE so we agree it really is necessary. Then, I will be there for you. If I am not at my desk, call my cell phone: 516-330-9798. I am close by and we can meet! You can call my home: 631-451-0478. Let me know if you need a special time. I’ll arrange with you!
