BioPREP (Biology Participation in Research and Education Program) is a six-week residential summer program for underrepresented minority students at two year educational institutions who want to transfer to four-year schools and prepare for careers in the biological sciences.

Information

ADMISSION CRITERIA

A minimum cumulative grade of a B (3.0 GPA)

A minimum of 24 credits to be completed by the end of the Spring 2003 semester

An introductory biology course is a prerequisite (more biology and/or chemistry is preferred)

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY RESEARCH
Students will spend six weeks in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory in the Life Sciences Building where they will learn molecular biology techniques including:

Inoculation of bacterial cultures

Mini preps from bacterial cultures

Restriction enzyme digests

Gel electrophoresis

Isolation of DNA

Ligation of DNA

Preparation of solutions

Bacterial transformation

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Hybridization

Southern blotting

Protein expression

SDS PAGE

In addition, the students will formulate proposals for their individual research projects. Concentrated work on these projects will begin during the second week of the program.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The application package should include the application form, two letters of recommendation from faculty, a one-page personal statement expressing your interest and expectations of the program, and a transcript. Enrollment is limited so we encourage you to apply early.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Students participating in the program will receive room and board at SUNY Stony Brook. They will be awarded a stipend after successfully completing the program. Housing will be in one of the newly renovated dormitories in Roth Quad. Please be aware that this is a mandatory residential program (Monday through Friday) and students must be able to commit their time fully (including evenings) to this program for the full six week period.
