Attention Non-Science Majors!
Do you need a science course with a lab?

This is a special course for non-science majors. If you are looking for a science course that will fulfill the "science with a lab requirement", this is your best bet. During this course we will study DNA fingerprinting, solving paternity cases, prenatal sex determination and how DNA is used in forensics. This is mainly a HANDS-ON lab experience. This course is for only 15 students! If you have any questions contact Dr. Rosa Gambier and at the same time visit our lab (Smithtown Science Bldg Rm 27).

     BY29 (formerly BY82) is a course that is in high demand and cannot be found in other places.  At SCCC, this course is at the forefront of the wave of Industrial Biotechnology that is coming to Long Island.

Catalog description:

    BY29 - BIOTECHNOLOGY IN OUR FAST-CHANGING WORLD
Introduces basic techniques in biotechnology and application of these techniques in such areas as forensics, paternity cases and agriculture. Emphasizes development of laboratory skills and includes issues of social interest such as bioethics of genetic cloning, discussions on use of engineered organisms for ecological control by elimination of pesticide use, gene therapy and disease control, and application of genetically engineered crops for mass food production. (3 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. laboratory.)
Prerequisite: BY14 or permission of instructor.
