Creating and Modifying Existing Files
- Creating a new page,
- Adding navigation links,
- Adding a link to an index file,
- Uploading
This assumes that you have created an index.htm or index.html file and you have said file somewhere on your computer in a folder, i.e. webfolio. and on the server.
The process:
1. Create your new document in Microsoft Word as a word processed document.
2. Add navigation elements at the bottom of your essay, i.e. return to main - the link is index.htm or index.html depending on what you named your opening file and an e-mail link to your e-mail.
- Creat two links at the bottom of the document: E-mail and Return to Main.
- Type the words E-mail and Return to Main.
- Highlight the text - E-mail
- Go to the link icon in your Microsoft Word document window - circled in red at the top of the window.
- At the bottom the new window that opens, the highlighted text will appear in the Text to display window.
- Click on the E-Mail Address button in the bottom left (circled in red).
- Either select from the list in the Recently used e-mail addresses window or type in the new address.
- Click OK.
- You will be brought back to your document and you will see the text highlight removed and the text now underlined in a color. This indicates that a link has been created.
![]()
- Handle the Return To Main Text the same way.
- Highlight the text - Return to Main - index.htm or index.html
- Go to the link icon in your Microsoft Word document window
- Click on the Existing File or Web page icon displayed in the upper left of the window.
- Type in either index.htm or index.html depending upon how you named your initial file.
3. Save it as a either a Web page or html document - NOT AS A DOCUMENT.
4. Give it a short file name, i.e., n.htm or nar.htm. Stay away from long file names, CAPITAL LETTERS, funny characters ( -<,*,&.^.#, )etc. Keep file names short and simple.
5. Save it to the folder you have created on your home computer for all your web files , i.e. a webfolio folder
If you have added images to this file, those images will be saved in a separate folder, i.e., n_files if you named the text file as n.htm or n.html. This new image folder must be uploaded when you upload teh file.6. Now open (if your copy matches the server copy) or download your index.htm (html) file if it doesn't match the file on your home computer.
7. Either go to the word "Narrative" or type in the word "Narrative" and create a link to your new narrative file, i.e, n.htm
8. Save that new index file to the same location - it will default to where you retrieved it from unless you downloaded it from the server.
9. Now open your ftp program, configure and connect to the server. See the FTP process. For more information on maintaining and uploading an account on the college server go to the college site.
10. Once the program opens and is connected there will be two windows. In the left window ( local ) navigate to the folder where you have stored both index and narrative files.
11. Double click on that folder and when it opens, highlight both files.
12. In the right window, remote or server side, single or double click on the public_html folder.
13. Hit the transfer arrow and both index and narrative file (previously highlighted) will move over to the server. If your index file has the same name as the file existing in the public_html folder, the new file will over ride the existing file. If it is different, in any way, it will add another and create problems for you.
14. Now go to your browser, go to http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/oconnog/comp/rosters.html or http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/oconnog/story/rosters.html and navigate to your name. Click on your name. If you do not see narrative highlighed as a link, click on the refresh button of your browser to make sure you have the most recent version.
15. Click on the new link to make sure all is sweet in cyber land.
That's it. It seems more complicated than it is. Step by step directions always take longer and appear more complicated than they are.
