Using Digital Imaging for Collaborative
Learning
The
Biology Department of Suffolk Community College (SCC), Ammerman
Campus has received a two-year NSF CCLI A&I grant to incorporate collaborative
learning in eight morphology-based laboratory courses. Educational research
has indicated that individual microscopy study, although traditional in
biology, isolates students and discourages collaborative learning. Integrated student digital imaging
workstations enhance group interactions and enable students to learn from
their peers, an effective pedagogy for developing higher-order learning. The
grant funds professional development workshops providing information on
collaborative learning methodologies and digital imaging technology for faculty
teaching biology and professional assistants. Digital images captured by
students from lab experiments and active learning exercises are posted to
course websites to provide students with distance education opportunities. For
