Using Digital Imaging for Collaborative Learning

The Biology Department of Suffolk Community College (SCC), Ammerman Campus has received a two-year NSF CCLI A&I grant to incorporate collaborative learning in eight morphology-based laboratory courses. Educational research has indicated that individual microscopy study, although traditional in biology, isolates students and discourages collaborative learning.  Integrated student digital imaging workstations enhance group interactions and enable students to learn from their peers, an effective pedagogy for developing higher-order learning.

The grant funds professional development workshops providing information on collaborative learning methodologies and digital imaging technology for faculty teaching biology and professional assistants. Digital images captured by students from lab experiments and active learning exercises are posted to course websites to provide students with distance education opportunities.
