COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the role of business in American life as
a primary source of goods, services, employment and income. The course provides the beginning
business student and the non-business student with an understanding of the
basic nature and scope of business and its relation to government and all
members of society. Students
examine the operation and activities of large and small enterprises and the
interrelationship of the various specialized fields of business.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Through lectures, classroom
discussions, and readings, the student will come to understand:
1. the
terminology used in business organizations;
2. the
types of business organizations and how they operate in our modern day
political, social and economic environment;
3. the
basic functions of management within small sole proprietorships and giant
corporations and why these functions are essential to a successful business;
4. the
decision making process used by managers and/or owners
5. the
common causes of business problems and methods used to resolve them;
6. the
behavior of various employees and managers of business and how to influence
that behavior to achieve the objectives of the organization;
7. the
components of a marketing strategy and their importance;
8. financial,
accounting and computer techniques and their importance as tools of business.
PROCEDURES FOR ACCOMPLISHING
THESE OBJECTIVES
1. At each class there will be a
summary of the assigned topic.
This summary will include
both lecture and discussion.
2. Tests will be conducted throughout the semester.
3. Current business news from daily newspapers will be
reviewed.
4. Case studies, films, and other audio visual aids may be
utilized.
5. Articles from business publications may be analyzed.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS FOR
COMPLETION OF COURSE
1. Read assigned chapters in the text and be prepared to
discuss them in class.
2. Successful completion of a
maximum of 3 examinations based on textbook, class lectures and discussions and
any outside reading assignments, each of class length. The specific dates will be announced in
class. Questions will be objective
and/or essay type.
3. Complete any assigned case
studies and articles. The specific
nature and due dates will be announced in class.
4. Substantial, meaningful class
participation is essential to the success of student development and will be given
serious consideration when evaluating student performance.
GRADING POLICY
The students' grade will be
determined as follows:
A maximum of 3 exams at 33 1/3% each .................100%
Note: Instructor's evaluation of class performance will have
definite effect on borderline grades.
ABSENCE POLICY
Attendance at every class meeting is
expected. Absences not over the
equivalent of two classes is acceptable.
Extended absences due to illness or accident will be handled by personal
consultation between the student and the professor. Any missed work, including tests or other assignments, is
the student's liability and will so effect his or her grade. Students with excessive absences may be
dropped and/or given an F grade for the course.
TESTS, ASSIGNMENT, MAKE‑UP
POLICY, ETC.:
--Late cases, article assignments or
projects, even if the student is absent will NOT be accepted.
--Makeup exams will be given for
extenuating circumstances only.
--There is NO tape recording of
lectures allowed unless by special permission of the instructor
--Courteous behavior is expected.
--Cell phones should be put on
silent ring.
