COURSE OUTLINE

 

 

COURSE TITLE:  Computing for Business         CATALOG NO: BA22

INSTRUCTOR:                                                        SEMESTER: Fall 2006

 

 OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

 

a)         The student will utilize microcomputers to create texts, spreadsheets, and databases that can be used to analyze business decisions and solve business problems.

 

b)         The student will develop an understanding of the Microsoft XP operating system.

 

c)         The student will understand the practical application of word processing, spreadsheets and database software.

 

d)         The student will be able to explore the Internet and present data in Word, Power Point, Excel and Access.

 

 PROCEDURES FOR ACCOMPLISHING THESE OBJECTIVES:

 

a)         Lectures and discussions will be held for each new topic.

 

b)         Each student will use a microcomputer and software technique will be illustrated by using a Smart Board and/or a Proxima.

 

c)         Problems from the textbook will be emphasized and homework assignments will reinforce the topics.

 

d)         Students will complete application projects.

 

 STUDENT REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION:

 

a)         Reading the assigned material and participation in class discussion.

 

b)         Successful completion of required examinations.

 

c)         Successful and timely completion of all assignments and projects.  All work must be printed and labeled with your name, chapter and assignment on each file.  Work must be backed up.

 

d)    Assignments will require additional lab hours to complete.  Hours of availability for the lab are posted on the computer room door.

 

GRADING PRACTICES:

 

The studentÕs grade will be determined in the following manner:

 

3 scheduled examsÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ. 30%

Projects (Excel, Access PowerPoint web cases) 40%

Homework, Class Work & Attendance               30%

                                                                           100%                             

 

 RULES CONCERNING STUDENT ABSENCE AND LATENESS:

 

Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes.  If you are unable to attend class for a prolonged period of time, please contact me.  Whenever a student misses a class, it is his/her responsibility to make-up the class work, and to find out if additional work has been assigned.  If you are unable to take an exam, please speak to me before the exam or provide a doctorÕs note or similar documentation after the test.
