IT 61:  CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION OF ITALY

 

 

 

I.          Course Title:  Culture and Civilization of Italy

 

 

II.        Catalog Description:

            Overview of culture and civilization of Italy through examination of             literature, history and art forms, including film, music and mass media.              Given in Italian.

 

 

III.       Goals:

 

            At the end of IT61 the student will be able to:

 

á      understand the complex problem of Italian national identity and the different interpretation of this concept through Italian history

á      comprehend the cultural and historical evolution of Italy from pre-Roman times through modern day republic

á      demonstrate awareness of the different cultures of ancient and modern Italy

á      recognize key historical events and figures

á      acquire relevant cultural vocabulary to discuss the sitory and cultures of Italy orally and in writing.

 

 

IV.       Outcome Behaviors:

 

            To successfully complete this course the students will be able to:

á      articulate an understanding of the diversity and complexity of Italy, its people and its culture

á      discuss social, political and/or economic issues in the history of Italy, including different aspects of ItalyÕs civilization:  art, music, literature, film, history, geography, architecture, literature, law, etc.

á      employ the vocabulary acquired through course readings and classroom discussions when writing and speaking about artistic, cultural, historical or economic issues

á      demonstrate an understanding of the social, economic, and political structures of Italy today

á      compare and contrast personal experiences, opinions and reactions to everyday life in Italy today.

 

V.        Programs that Require this Course:*

 

            Italian/FL is required in all Liberal Arts curricula except 103, General             Studies, where it may be used to fulfill the Humanities requirement.

 

            *Students in the International Studies Program are advised to add written                work from this course to their electronic portfolio

* Times shown reflect the total time allotted to a topic over the course of a semester; they are not reflective of any one particular class session.  The remaining class time is spent engaged in the analysis of text portions, reading comprehension questions and grammar review and exercises, which encompass the following themes:

á      Current political situation

á      North-South (two different economies)

                    

á      The ÒLega NordÓ and its controversy    

 

á      Italy and the two World Wars

 

á      From Monarchy to Republic

á      Sandro Pertini and the other Presidents of the Italian Republic

 

á      Gothic and Romanic  styles on the Peninsula
