The Social Science Department
offers independent studies in the social sciences. To take an independent
studies course the student must find a faculty sponsor. Professor Westis
interested in sponsoring independent studies concerning non-governmental
organizations. One such organization, which has a National Internship
Program, is Project Vote Smart. If you are interested in servingas
an intern with this organization and receiving college credit at thesame
time, contact Professor West.

Non-governmental organizations
(NGO,s) are private; organized and run by their membership in orderto
advance a cause in which they believe. In a world of more than 6 billionpeople,
the individual has little impact on community affairs unless heor she combines
with many other people in common cause. There are thousandsof these organizations
around the world. Some are involved with internationalconcerns, some with
national and some with local concerns. They representa civil society which
has an impact upon actions by governments. Whilegovernments are often constrained
by political circumstances and cumbersomebureacracies, non-governmental organizations
are more likely to be ablefocus upon particular problems and take effective
and more efficient action. They are also necessary to influence and pressure
government to act. Oneof the National Organizations listed below, If Not
Now, (INN) alsolists other NGO,s and their websites. INN is a political
action NGO similarto Project Vote Smart.
The following is a list of selected
non-governmental organizations:
