Sovereignty

Sovereignity is the condition of ultimate power, above which there is no earthly power, and for which there is no further resort. It was used to describe the power of kings in the pre-industrial age when monarchies were the rule and the power of kings was greater than that of any other potentate or ruler. When liberal revolutions overthrew monarchies, it was said that the people were sovereign.
